Kaschk is a regular destination for us, whether for a great coffee break or a night out tasting some amazing craft beer – most of which come from Scandinavia and therefore are rare to find here in Berlin!

What surprised us even more on our first visit though are the two HUGE Shuffleboards downstairs, which are great fun for groups on a night out. We spoke with awesome manager Katrine Finsand to find out a bit more about what makes Kaschk different to other bars…

Kaschk is a great example of speciality coffee hub by day and awesome bar by night, boosted with beer tasting boards and even shuffleboards. Tell us about the concept?

Thank you for all the compliments! The concept is all about good products – coffee, craft beer and shuffleboard.

The idea is to offer people a warm space by day, where they feel welcome to sit down with a good coffee and work/have a meeting/read a book, and then gradually transform into a craft beer bar during the afternoon.

Unlike a lot of other craft beer spots, a lot of your beers come from Scandinavia which is really refreshing to see, as most of them are completely new to Berliners. How do you go about the selection process?

We wanted to focus on Nordic and German craft beer all the way from the beginning and are happy to see that we have welcomed more and more Norwegian and Nordic craft breweries since we opened.

By offering Nordic craft beer, we both introduce new beers and highlight the story behind KASCHK.  Also, in terms of selection we are lucky enough that now many breweries find us to introduce us to their beer!

We love your beer tasting boards, how many glasses do customers get when ordering one?

When ordering a tasting board, you can choose any 4 of the 12 beers we have on tap at the moment!

Kaschk shuffleboard

We hear you were the first to bring full-size shuffleboards into Berlin. Are they more common in Scandinavia and how is the game played?

Yes! Shuffleboard has become extremely popular in Norway and Sweden the last couple of years – and is still growing!

Briefly, the objective of the game is to slide, by hand, all four of one’s weights alternately against those of an opponent, so that they reach the highest scoring area without falling off the end of the board into the alley.

A player’s weight(s) must be further down the board than his opponent’s weight(s), in order to be in scoring position. This may be achieved either by knocking off the opponent’s weight(s) with yours, or by outdistancing them. The first team to 15 points wins!

You also invite the brewers of your craft beers to come hang out with your customers and play shuffleboard. We love how casual this all sounds -has it been received well?

It has! We had monthly Beat-The-Brewer tournaments last year, both to introduce people to shuffleboard and to host tap takeovers from the breweries we love.

These events give guests an unique chance to talk to the brewers and learn more about the story behind Berlin’s craft breweries. The tournaments were full every month – so hugely popular!

How do you feel the craft beer scene in Berlin is evolving compared to other European cities?

I’ve been introduced to so many amazing beer-loving people since I moved to Berlin ; Brewers, bar owners, guests.

Even though it might have started to evolve a bit later here than in some other European cities, it feels like the craft beer scene is on the rise here in Berlin. And we are happy to see that there is now a boosting enthusiasm for good beer!

What’s your personal favourite beer available at Kaschk at the moment and why?

At this moment my favourite is a Ryllik Saison from the Norwegian brewery Ægir. Yum!

What’s the most challenging part of managing Kaschk?

Coming from Norway, the most challenging part for me has been learning how the system works in a new country!

Saying that it has of course been a fun (and quick)  learning curve.

Where do you like to eat, drink, relax (or) party in Berlin?

I have become a fan of Dr To´s (the dumplings!) in Neukölln and the small cocktail bars close to the canal.

Complete the following sentence “For me, Berlin is…”

…an inspiring and diverse city 🙂

Kaschk is one of our favourite bars, and a great spot for a daytime Flat White too. We reckon you’ll love it too! Keep up to date with their news and events on their Facebook. And see you down there for a Norwegian craft beer soon!
